Overview

Swayambhunath is at least 2,000 years old, making it one of the oldest religious sites in the Kathmandu Valley. The self-arising stupa sits atop a steep hill reached by 365 stone steps from the eastern entrance. The famous resident rhesus monkeys give the site its popular nickname and are considered sacred by locals. The stupa complex mixes Buddhist and Hindu iconography in a way that is uniquely Nepali.

The climb takes about ten minutes and rewards you with sweeping views across Kathmandu. Early mornings are ideal — mist over the valley, monks doing puja, and very few other tourists. There is also a road entrance on the western side if you prefer not to climb stairs. Entry costs NPR 200 for foreign nationals. The complex contains several smaller temples, a museum, and a large Buddha footprint shrine.
