Overview

The chital or spotted deer (Axis axis) is the most numerous deer species in Nepal's Terai and is unmistakable with its rich rufous coat covered in white spots retained throughout adult life. Large herds of 50 to 200 animals are routinely seen in Chitwan's grasslands, and their alarm calls are one of the most important signals in the jungle ecosystem -- alerting all animals including tigers and leopards to danger.

Ecological Role

Chital are a keystone prey species. The health of tiger and leopard populations in Chitwan is directly linked to chital abundance. Park surveys estimate over 50,000 chital in Chitwan's 952 sq km, making them the most frequently seen mammal on any safari. They associate closely with langur monkeys, eating fruit dropped by the monkeys from trees above while the monkeys benefit from the deer's alertness to ground predators.

Best Viewing Experiences

You will see spotted deer on virtually every jeep or walking safari in Chitwan. The grasslands east of Sauraha and the Sunrise and 21 Curve areas hold the densest herds. Dawn safaris between October and March reveal large mixed herds of chital, hog deer, and rhinos in the same grassland sections.

Rutting Season

The rut runs from December to March. Males make loud roaring calls audible for several hundred metres, and antler-to-antler clashes are frequently observed. This is also the best time for dramatic wildlife photography as males are maximally active and visible.

FAQ

How close do spotted deer allow you to get?
In areas with regular tourist vehicles, chital are semi-habituated and will allow approach to within 10 to 20 metres before moving away. Walking safari encounters depend on wind direction and approach technique.

Do spotted deer migrate seasonally in Chitwan?
They do not undertake long migrations but move between grassland and forest edges seasonally. They prefer open grassland in the cool dry season and dense forest shade during summer.

Can I see spotted deer outside of national parks in Nepal?
Yes. Chital inhabit the buffer zone forests adjacent to Chitwan and Bardia, and are occasionally seen from the road between Bharatpur and Narayanghat in the early morning.
