Spiny Babbler Nepal: The Country's Only Endemic Bird

The spiny babbler is Nepal's sole endemic bird species -- found nowhere else on Earth. It inhabits scrubby hillside habitat in central and western Nepal and requires a dedicated search to find.

Overview

The spiny babbler (Acanthoptila nipalensis) holds an extraordinary distinction -- it is the only bird species found exclusively in Nepal and nowhere else on Earth. This medium-sized, skulking babbler inhabits dense scrub, tall grass, and secondary growth on steep hillsides at 1,000 to 2,100 m altitude in central and western Nepal. It was famously considered potentially extinct until its rediscovery in 1947 by the American ornithologist Robert Fleming Sr.

Where to Find It

The Godavari area in the Lalitpur District south of Kathmandu is the most accessible and reliable location. The scrubby hillsides along the Godavari-Pulchowki road at 1,400 to 1,800 m hold a resident population, and early morning visits between March and June produce sightings on 60 to 70 percent of attempts.

Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park's lower scrubby zones (1,700 to 2,000 m) also hold spiny babblers, and the Nagarjun area's south-facing slopes are productive in winter when the birds are most vocal.

Further west, the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve area and the Kali Gandaki corridor near Beni hold populations at the species' western range limit.

Identification

The spiny babbler is streaked brown above with a rufous-orange tail and pale underparts. The face has a prominent white supercilium and the name comes from the narrow, spiny tips of its tail feathers. Its call is a series of rich, melodious whistles -- the best way to locate it in dense scrub is by ear first, then patient observation.

Planning a Kathmandu daytrip to Godavari? Use Sajilo's cab booking at sajilo.net for a direct morning pickup from your hotel -- the drive takes about 45 minutes and costs approximately NPR 1,200 to 1,500.

FAQ

Is the spiny babbler easy to see once I am in the right habitat?
It requires patience. The species is secretive and stays in dense cover. The best approach is to find a patch of scrub habitat, stand quietly at the edge, and wait. Playback calls (used carefully and sparingly) can bring birds into view.

Can I hire a birding guide specifically for spiny babbler at Godavari?
Yes. Several Kathmandu-based birding tour operators and individual guides specialise in this species. A half-day guided spiny babbler search costs approximately NPR 3,000 to 5,000 including transport.

Is the spiny babbler common or rare within Nepal?
Within its specific habitat it is locally common, but the habitat -- dense hillside scrub at mid-elevation -- is shrinking due to agricultural conversion. The species is classified as Least Concern but faces ongoing habitat pressure.
