Snow Leopard Nepal: Tracking the Ghost of the Himalayas

Overview

The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is arguably the most sought-after animal in the Himalayas. Nepal's population of 300 to 400 individuals ranges across the high alpine zones of Mustang, Dolpo, Kangchenjunga Conservation Area, Manaslu, and Langtang National Park. Spotting one requires patience, altitude acclimatisation, and local knowledge -- but it is increasingly possible for dedicated wildlife travellers.

Best Destinations

Upper Mustang above Lo Manthang is considered Nepal's premier snow leopard viewing area. The snow leopard's preferred prey -- blue sheep (bharal) -- exists in large herds here, and open terrain allows long-range spotting with a good scope. Dedicated snow leopard treks depart from Jomsom between November and February when cats descend to lower elevations following prey.

Shey Phoksundo National Park in Dolpo is the second hotspot. The area around Crystal Mountain is a traditional pilgrimage circuit that also passes through prime snow leopard territory at 4,000 to 5,500 m. Treks here require a Restricted Area Permit costing USD 500 per week.

Kangchenjunga Conservation Area in eastern Nepal has fewer visitors and a healthy snow leopard population. The Ramche high camp area at 4,580 m consistently yields sightings for patient observers using spotting scopes.

Practical Tips

Bring a spotting scope of at least 60x magnification -- snow leopards blend perfectly into grey rock faces. The best light for scanning cliff faces is from 7 am to 10 am. Hire a local tracker from a village rather than relying solely on a trekking guide; village trackers know individual cats and their territory.

FAQ

What time of year is best for snow leopard spotting in Nepal?
December through February is peak season. Cats descend to around 3,000 to 4,000 m following blue sheep herds, and snow makes tracks easier to follow.

How much does a snow leopard trek in Upper Mustang cost?
Budget NPR 250,000 to NPR 400,000 for a ten-day dedicated wildlife trek including permits, guide, accommodation, and meals. The Restricted Area Permit alone costs USD 500 per ten days.

Are there any conservation fees for snow leopard areas?
Yes. Dolpo requires a Restricted Area Permit. Kangchenjunga Conservation Area has an entry fee of NPR 3,000 for foreign visitors. Funds go directly to anti-poaching and community conservation programmes.
