Overview

Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is one of Nepal's most accessible yet least-celebrated protected areas. Straddling the northern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, the park covers 159 square kilometres of subtropical and temperate broadleaf forest between 1,350 and 2,732 metres. It protects Kathmandu's primary watershed, supplying clean water to the city, and provides a critical green lung for a metropolitan area of over 3.5 million people.

Wildlife is surprisingly rich for a park bordered by a major Asian capital. Leopards patrol the upper forest at night, and camera traps regularly record them. Himalayan black bears forage on acorns and wild fruits through autumn, occasionally raiding orchards on the valley rim. Barking deer, wild boar, porcupines, and civet cats are common. The herpetofauna is diverse, with Himalayan pit vipers, flying lizards, and numerous frog species in the stream corridors.

Birding is Shivapuri's greatest wildlife draw. The forest supports spectacular montane species including Satyr Tragopan, Kalij Pheasant, Blue-capped Rock-Thrush, and multiple laughingthrush species. The Jamacho area in the Nagarjun Forest offers additional birding within Kathmandu city limits.

The park is reached from Budhanilkantha (north Kathmandu) via a 20-minute taxi ride. Entrance fees cost NPR 250 for foreigners. Day hikes to Shivapuri Peak offer panoramic Himalayan views and excellent wildlife spotting.
