Sarangkot Sunrise: Complete Planning Guide

Sarangkot delivers the best accessible Himalayan sunrise in the Pokhara region and is achievable without trekking experience. The planning is what separates a great experience from a cold disappointment.

Overview

Sarangkot sits on a ridge 1,592m above Pokhara's lakeside, a 45-minute drive or 2-hour walk above the city. The viewpoint at the top looks directly north at Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Lamjung Himal, and Manaslu โ€” nearly the entire Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs in one sweeping panorama. On a clear morning, the sunrise over this lineup is among the most reliably accessible mountain spectacles in Asia.

The viewpoint has a concrete platform, a few chai stalls that open before dawn, and usually a crowd of fellow early risers. Arriving 30 minutes before sunrise gets you a good position. The light sequence goes: grey-blue pre-dawn, then a pink flush along the highest peaks, then a rapid orange-gold wash down from summit to shoulder to ridge as the sun clears the eastern horizon.

The road to Sarangkot is paved and accessible by vehicle up to within a short walk of the summit. Driving is the standard approach for sunrise visits. Sajilo's early morning availability makes the 4:30am departure from Lakeside practical โ€” most street taxis at that hour charge premium rates or are simply not available.

Paragliding

Sarangkot is also the primary launch point for tandem paragliding over the Pokhara Valley. Flights of 20-40 minutes are available from accredited operators, landing in a field at the edge of Lakeside. The combination of thermal activity over the valley and the mountain backdrop makes this one of the better paragliding venues in Asia.

FAQ

Can I walk up to Sarangkot instead of driving?
Yes. A trail from Lakeside North takes 1.5-2 hours. Walking down after sunrise (1 hour) is a pleasant way to wake up fully. The pre-dawn walk up requires a headlamp and a confident pace on unlit trail sections.

What if the clouds cover the mountains?
This happens, especially in the shoulder seasons. November through January gives the highest probability of clear skies. Checking the forecast the night before gives some indication, but Himalayan weather is never fully predictable.
