Overview

Red pandas inhabit Nepal's cool temperate forests between 2,200m and 4,800m, wherever ring bamboo grows beneath a canopy of fir, oak, or rhododendron. They are crepuscular โ€” most active at dawn and dusk โ€” and spend daylight hours resting in trees. Langtang National Park, particularly the Ghoda Tabela and Kyanjin area, supports a healthy population. Eastern Nepal's Ilam and Taplejung districts, including Kangchenjunga Conservation Area, also hold strong numbers.

The best technique is walking slowly through bamboo-dense forest with a local naturalist who knows individual animal home ranges. Red pandas are detectible by their distinctive musky scent mark on logs and rocks. April and May, when mating activity increases movement, are ideal months. October and November offer clear skies and comfortable temperatures.

Avoid loud groups โ€” red pandas alarm easily and retreat silently into the canopy. Early morning starts (05:30โ€“06:00) before other trekkers are on the trail significantly improve chances.
