8 Best Day Trips from Pokhara
Pokhara is not just a destination in itself — it is a base for eight excellent day excursions ranging from gorges and caves to hilltop monasteries and quiet sister lakes.
Sarangkot
The sunrise viewpoint (8km from Lakeside, 45-minute drive) delivers the most accessible Himalayan panorama in the Pokhara region. Beyond the dawn visit, Sarangkot is the launch point for tandem paragliding over the valley. The trail down to Lakeside through terraced fields takes about 90 minutes.
Begnas and Rupa Lakes
The quieter eastern lakes 14km from Pokhara combine into a half-day of rowing, birdwatching, and walking through farming villages. Significantly less visited than Phewa Lake. Best done as a morning trip when the light on the mountains is best.
Gupteshwor Cave and Devi's Fall
The paired natural attractions are 2km from Lakeside. Devi's Fall plunges underground into a cavern that connects directly to Gupteshwor Cave on the opposite side of the road. The cave is a Hindu pilgrimage site with natural formations and a window looking up into the base of the falls.
Mahendra Cave and Bat Cave
North of the city (5km), these two limestone caverns offer contrasting experiences. Mahendra Cave is accessible on electric lights with good stalactite formations. Bat Cave requires squeezing through a narrow passage in the dark to emerge into a chamber of resident bats.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Tansen
The old Newar hill town of Tansen is 3 hours south of Pokhara and technically beyond day-trip range, but travellers with an early start and flexible end time make it work. The dhaka weaving workshops, the Amar Narayan Temple, and the Rani Mahal justify the distance.
Bandipur
1.5 hours north of Pokhara on the Prithvi Highway, Bandipur is the most achievable day trip for a medieval hill-town experience from Pokhara. The car-free main street, the Tundikhel viewpoint, and the cave at Siddha Gupha combine into a satisfying full day.
Kali Gandaki Gorge Edge
The Kali Gandaki cuts the world's deepest river gorge between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. While the full gorge trek is a multi-day undertaking, driving north toward Baglung and Beni puts you at the start of the gorge within 2 hours and gives a sense of the extraordinary geological scale.
Lumle Agricultural Centre
Lumle, 22km west of Pokhara on the Annapurna circuit road, sits at 1,600m in one of Nepal's wettest zones and hosts an agricultural research station surrounded by experimental gardens and rhododendron forest. The drive up through the Seti Gandaki valley is scenic.
Sajilo covers all Pokhara city routes and can arrange day-trip transfers to the closer destinations including Sarangkot, Begnas Lake, and the cave area.
FAQ
Which day trip is most worth the time from Pokhara?
Bandipur offers the most complete experience per hour invested. Begnas Lake is the best half-day option. Sarangkot sunrise should be on every Pokhara itinerary regardless.
Can I combine Mahendra Cave and Bat Cave with Devi's Fall in one morning?
Yes, easily. All three are north of the city within 6km of Lakeside. A Sajilo booking covering all three takes 3-4 hours total.
Is Tansen manageable as a day trip from Pokhara?
Borderline. The 3-hour drive each way makes it a long day. One night in Tansen is a better plan if schedules allow.
