Paragliding

Pokhara's paragliding scene is one of Asia's best. Tandem flights launch from Sarangkot (1,592m) and land in the Lakeside field, covering a 30-40 minute flight over Phewa Lake with Annapurna above. Thermal activity from the lake creates reliable lift conditions from September through May. Accredited operators charge NPR 7,000-9,000 for a standard tandem. Acrobatic flights and higher-altitude cross-country routes are available for those who want more.

Ultralight Aircraft

Small two-seat ultralight planes fly from Pokhara Airport for 15-30 minute mountain circuit flights. The cockpit-level view of Machhapuchhre and the Annapurna range is different from anything achievable on the ground. Costs are higher than paragliding but the intimacy with the mountains justifies it.

White Water Rafting

Three rivers serve the Pokhara rafting scene. The Seti Gandaki near the city offers easy Class II-III rapids suitable for beginners and families. The Kali Gandaki south of Baglung provides more challenging Class III-IV water. The Marsyangdi river to the east is the premier multi-day rafting river in the region for experienced paddlers.

Zip-Lining

The High Ground zip line 10km south of Pokhara is one of the world's steepest commercial zip lines โ€” 1.8km long with a 600m vertical drop. The line runs over forest and river gorge with mountain views throughout.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Kayaking

Phewa Lake is an ideal venue for first-time kayakers. Half-day and full-day rental kayaks are available from the lake shore. Guided kayak tours to the Barahi Temple island and the quieter western shore introduce navigation skills in calm conditions.

Trekking Trailheads

Pokhara is the starting point for the Annapurna Circuit, the Annapurna Sanctuary, the Poon Hill trek, and the Khopra Danda route. The Poon Hill trek (3-4 days) from Nayapul is the most accessible Himalayan viewpoint trek in Nepal.

Use Sajilo for transfers to the trailheads at Nayapul, Phedi, and Kande, as well as for the early morning Sarangkot run before adventure activities.

Planning Notes

The best seasons for outdoor adventure in Pokhara are October-November and March-April. Paragliding is possible most of the year except heavy monsoon days. Book adventure activities through operators with current NATA or NEPCA accreditation.

FAQ

Is paragliding safe in Pokhara?
The Pokhara paragliding industry has a long history and regulated operators. Choose operators displaying NATA accreditation and avoid the cheapest street-side offers. Weather cancellations are common in shoulder season and legitimate operators refund or reschedule.

Do I need prior experience for white water rafting?
No for the Seti Gandaki day trips, which are genuinely beginner-friendly. The Kali Gandaki and Marsyangdi require stronger swimmers and previous rafting experience.

Can I combine paragliding and the Poon Hill trek in one Pokhara visit?
Yes. Fly on day one or two, then head to the trailhead for a 3-4 day trek. Many visitors use Pokhara as both an adventure hub and a trekking base in the same trip.
