Pokhara 3 Days: The Ultimate Guide

Pokhara combines Himalayan panoramas, a serene lake, and a relaxed lakeside scene into three of the most enjoyable days Nepal offers. Here is how to make the most of every hour.

Day One: Phewa Lake and Lakeside

Pokhara's heart is Phewa Lake, a reflective sheet of water backed by the Annapurna massif. On a clear morning, the snow peaks mirror perfectly on the surface. Rent a wooden rowboat from the Lakeside ghat and paddle to the Tal Barahi Temple, a two-storey pagoda sitting on a small island in the middle of the lake. The effort is gentle and the views reward.

Lakeside (Baidam) is Pokhara's tourist neighbourhood, a long strip of restaurants, gear shops, and guesthouses running parallel to the lake. Spend the afternoon walking its length, browsing, and settling into the unhurried pace that defines Pokhara. The food scene here is strong: thakali set meals, momos, and fresh trout from the lake feature at dozens of good spots.

Day Two: Sarangkot and Caves

Wake at 4:30am for the drive to Sarangkot, a ridge viewpoint north of the city. Watching the Annapurna range ignite in pink and gold at sunrise is an experience that justifies the early alarm. Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Annapurna II, and Lamjung Himal are all visible on a clear day. Return to Lakeside for breakfast.

After breakfast, head to Mahendra Cave, a limestone cavern with impressive stalactite formations, and nearby Bat Cave, a narrow squeeze through a dark passage rewarding those who do not mind confined spaces. Both are within a short drive of each other. In the afternoon, visit the International Mountain Museum, one of Asia's finest museums dedicated to mountaineering history, with exhibits on all fourteen 8000m peaks.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Day Three: Begnas Lake and Devi's Fall

Begnas Lake, 14km east of Pokhara, offers the quiet that Phewa Lake has partly lost to tourism. Arrive in the morning when local fishermen pull nets across the glassy surface. The surrounding hills are terraced with rice fields and the atmosphere is genuinely rural.

Return to Pokhara for Devi's Fall (Patale Chhango), a dramatic waterfall that plunges directly into an underground cavern. During monsoon the volume is thunderous. Across the road, Gupteshwor Cave is a Hindu pilgrimage site that connects underground to the base of the falls.

Use Sajilo for the early morning Sarangkot run when auto-rickshaws are scarce and walking in the dark is not ideal.

Adventure Options

Pokhara is Nepal's adventure capital. Paragliding from Sarangkot to Lakeside takes about 30 minutes and costs roughly NPR 7,000-9,000. Ultralight flights offer a cockpit-level view of the Himalayas. White water rafting on the Seti or Kali Gandaki rivers suits various difficulty levels.

Practical Notes

The airport in Pokhara connects directly to Kathmandu in about 25 minutes by air. The tourist bus from Kathmandu takes 6-7 hours but is far cheaper. Weather is clearest October through December and again in March.

FAQ

When is the best time to see Annapurna from Pokhara?
October and November give the clearest skies after monsoon has washed the haze away. March is the second best window. Avoid June through September when clouds frequently obscure the mountains.

Is Pokhara suitable for families with young children?
Yes. The lake, boat rides, caves, and museum suit children well. The pace is relaxed, the food is varied, and the streets near Lakeside are flat and walkable.

How far is Pokhara from Kathmandu?
About 200km by road, which takes 6-7 hours by tourist bus. The Prithvi Highway route is scenic through the Trishuli River gorge. Flights take 25-30 minutes.
