Pharping Buddhist Caves Guide
Pharping at the southern edge of the Kathmandu Valley holds cave meditation sites sacred to both Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism, accessible as a half-day trip from the capital.
Overview
Pharping is a small town 16km south of Kathmandu on the road toward Dakshinkali temple. The area has been a site of Buddhist meditation since at least the 8th century CE. The Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) caves on the hillside above Pharping are among the most venerated sites in Tibetan Buddhism โ the great master is said to have achieved realization here before leaving for Tibet.
The main caves are accessed by a steep stone staircase flanked by prayer flags and mani walls. Yanglesho Cave (where Guru Rinpoche meditated) has a small shrine inside with butter lamps burning continuously. The adjacent Asura Cave complex includes a natural rock formation said to show the handprint of Guru Rinpoche. Several monasteries have been built around the caves by Tibetan and Bhutanese communities, and retreat cabins cling to the hillside where contemporary practitioners still undertake long meditation retreats.
Below the caves, a Tara temple and a series of Hindu shrines create an unusual co-existence of Buddhist and Hindu sacred space in the same compact area. Dakshinkali temple, 3km further along the road, is one of the most powerful Kali temples in Nepal โ the animal sacrifice ceremonies held on Tuesdays and Saturdays attract thousands of devotees.
Sajilo makes Pharping accessible as a morning half-day from Kathmandu, with the option to continue to Dakshinkali before returning to the city.

FAQ
How long does a visit to Pharping take?
The caves and surrounding shrines take 1.5-2 hours. Add 30-45 minutes for Dakshinkali if combining both. A half-day from Kathmandu is comfortable.
Is the climb to the caves difficult?
The staircase is steep but short (15-20 minutes up). Sturdy footwear is recommended. The caves themselves have low entrances requiring a slight crouch.
