Pathibhara Devi Temple Eastern Nepal
Pathibhara Devi Temple at 3,794 metres is the most revered goddess shrine in eastern Nepal and offers stunning views of Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and the eastern Himalayan range.
Overview
Pathibhara Devi Temple stands at 3,794 metres in the Taplejung district of eastern Nepal. The goddess Pathibhara is worshipped as a protective deity by the Limbu, Rai, and Tamang communities, as well as by Hindu pilgrims from across Nepal and the neighbouring Indian states of Sikkim, Darjeeling, and Assam. The temple sees over 100,000 visitors annually, making it one of Nepal's most visited sacred sites despite its remote location.
The usual approach is from Taplejung or Phungling bazaar, with a cable car now operational from the valley floor to a point about 45 minutes below the temple. The final approach is a steep stone-paved path through prayer flags and smaller shrines. Animal sacrifice is common at the main altar; the forecourt can be crowded on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and during Dashain. The views from the temple are exceptional โ Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) dominates the eastern horizon on clear days.
Accommodation is available in Phungling and at basic teahouses closer to the temple. The best season is October to December and March to May.
