Patan Half-Day Sightseeing Guide

Patan, the city of fine arts, holds one of the Kathmandu Valley's three royal squares and a museum that puts most national collections to shame. Half a day barely does it justice.

Overview

Patan Durbar Square is the most photographed in the valley for good reason. The Krishna Mandir, a 17th-century temple built entirely of stone rather than brick and wood, anchors the square with an elegance that stops visitors mid-stride. Around it cluster the Vishwanath Temple, the Bhimsen Temple, and the old royal palace, each elaborately carved in styles that took generations of Newar craftsmen to perfect.

Inside the palace, the Patan Museum presents Nepal's finest collection of religious metalwork, stone sculpture, and decorative art. Exhibits are beautifully lit and thoughtfully labelled in English, placing each object in its historical and ritual context. Budget at least 90 minutes here. The museum cafe in the courtyard is one of the most pleasant lunch spots in the valley.

After the museum, walk south through Mangal Bazaar and the traditional metalworkers' quarter. Patan has been a centre of bronze and copper casting for centuries. Workshops are open to the street and you can watch artisans working by the lost-wax process that has changed little in a thousand years.

Sajilo makes the 20-minute trip from central Kathmandu to Patan easy, with no need to navigate the city's notorious traffic.

FAQ

Is Patan worth visiting if I have already seen Kathmandu Durbar Square?
Yes. Patan is distinct in character and the museum alone justifies the visit. Many travellers find Patan quieter and more refined than the main Kathmandu square.

What is the best time to visit Patan?
Weekday mornings before 11am are quietest. The square fills with tour groups by late morning on weekends.
