Pashupatinath Temple: History and Significance
Pashupatinath is Nepal's holiest Hindu temple and one of the most sacred Shiva shrines in all of South Asia. Its riverside ghats have been the site of cremation and worship for over 1,500 years.
Pashupatinath Temple stands on the banks of the Bagmati River 5km east of central Kathmandu, a complex of temples, ashrams, and burning ghats that constitutes Nepal's most important religious site.
Overview
The earliest documented reference to Pashupatinath dates to the Licchavi period (5th century CE), though tradition claims a much older origin. The current main temple was built in the 17th century and rebuilt after a devastating fire, featuring the distinctive pagoda architecture with a gilded copper roof and silver-clad doors. Only Hindus are permitted inside the main temple complex โ non-Hindus observe from the opposite bank of the Bagmati. The riverside ghats are open to all visitors and provide a profound encounter with Hindu death ritual: cremations occur daily and continuously, with the smoke of funeral pyres drifting across the sacred river. The Bagmati flows into the Ganges โ bodies cremated here are spiritually connected to Varanasi. Pashupatinath hosts Nepal's largest gathering during the Maha Shivaratri festival (February-March), when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive and thousands of Shaivite sadhus (holy men) emerge from forests and caves across South Asia, covering themselves in ash and gathering at the temple. The UNESCO inscription covers the entire monument zone including surrounding subsidiary temples and the Deupatan village adjacent to the complex.
FAQ
Can non-Hindus enter Pashupatinath? Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple complex but can access the temple grounds, the ghats along the river, and the surrounding subsidiary temples. The entry fee for non-Hindus covers the outer areas.
What is the Bagmati River's significance? The Bagmati is considered sacred because it eventually joins the Ganges. Cremation on its banks is spiritually equivalent to cremation in Varanasi. The river is severely polluted downstream โ a major environmental challenge for Kathmandu.
