Paragliding in Pokhara: Soaring Above the Himalayas from Sarangkot
Discover why Pokhara's Sarangkot launch site is one of the premier paragliding destinations on the planet.
Overview
Pokhara is widely considered the paragliding capital of Asia, and for good reason. The Sarangkot hill β sitting at 1,592 metres β offers consistent thermals, a dramatic Annapurna and Machhapuchhre backdrop, and a gentle lakeside landing zone at Phewa Tal. On any given clear morning, dozens of brightly coloured wings spiral above the valley in what locals call the morning thermal window, typically 9 am to noon.
Types of Flights
Operators in Pokhara offer three main formats. A standard tandem scenic flight lasts 20 to 30 minutes and costs around NPR 7,000. An aerobatic flight includes loops, wing-overs, and spirals for the thrill-seekers and runs NPR 9,000 to NPR 11,000. A cross-country flight covering the broader valley can last 45 minutes or more and is priced from NPR 12,000. All tandem flights are piloted by licensed instructors β no experience required from the passenger.
The Launch and Landing
You launch from Sarangkot, a short jeep ride above Pokhara town. The launch site is well-maintained with a grass slope and clear approach lines. Landing is at the Lakeside strip beside Phewa Tal β a flat, open field with enough room even on busier days. The whole experience from jeep pickup to landing takes roughly two hours.
Best Season
October through May is the reliable flying season. The Annapurna range is clearest in October and November. Monsoon (JuneβSeptember) grounds most flights. Even in winter the valley is flyable on sunny days, though mornings can be misty.

FAQ
Q: Do I need any paragliding experience?
None whatsoever for tandem flights. You run a few steps downhill, and the instructor does everything else. You simply enjoy the view.
Q: Is it safe?
Pokhara's paragliding industry is regulated by the Nepal Civil Aviation Authority. Reputable operators use certified Advance or Nova wings with daily inspections. Always ask to see your pilot's licence before flying.
Q: What should I wear?
Dress in layers β it is noticeably cooler in the air than on the ground. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory. Leave heavy backpacks behind; most operators provide a secure bag drop.
