Nepalgunj Gateway to Western Nepal

Nepalgunj is the transport hub of mid-western Nepal, a border town with a distinct Awadhi culture that serves as the jumping-off point for Bardia National Park, Rara Lake, and the remote western districts.

Overview

Nepalgunj sits in the Banke district of the Lumbini Province, straddling the road to the Rupaidiha-Bahraich border crossing with India. It is one of Nepal's most culturally interesting Terai towns, with a predominantly Muslim and Hindu Awadhi population whose food, architecture, and festival culture differ significantly from the hill communities that dominate Nepal's popular imagination.

The old bazaar around Clock Tower Chowk has a North Indian character: narrow lanes of spice and fabric merchants, silver jewellery shops, and chaikhanas (tea houses) serving sweet milky chai. The mosque and the temples share the central neighbourhoods without tension. The street food โ€” biryani, kebabs, fried snacks โ€” reflects the Awadhi culinary tradition shared across the border.

For travellers, Nepalgunj's main significance is as a transport hub. Flights connect to Kathmandu (50 minutes) and to Jumla and other mountain airstrips for onward connections to Rara Lake and the Karnali region. Overland connections serve Bardia National Park (2 hours), Surkhet (3 hours), and Dhangadhi (3 hours).

Sajilo operates within Nepalgunj for city transport, useful when arriving from the airport and needing to reach the bus park or accommodation without wrestling with auto-rickshaw pricing.
