Overview

Vipassana meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka is one of the most widely practised forms of insight meditation in the world. The technique involves observing bodily sensations without reaction, gradually developing equanimity and awareness. Courses are ten days long, conducted in complete silence (Noble Silence from day one to day ten), and offered entirely free of charge โ€” all costs are covered by donations from previous students. Nepal has multiple registered Vipassana centres, making it one of the best countries in Asia to take a course.

Dhamma Shringa โ€” Budhanilkantha

The centre at Budhanilkantha, north of Kathmandu, is the most accessible for international visitors. Courses run throughout the year, with male and female sections separated. The setting is a terraced garden below the Shivapuri hills. Registration is done entirely online through the Dhamma.org website. Courses fill months in advance โ€” apply three to four months ahead for your preferred dates.

Dhamma Janani โ€” Lumbini

The centre near Lumbini adds a powerful dimension to a Vipassana course โ€” sitting in meditation within walking distance of the Buddha's birthplace. The centre accepts students year-round and follows the same format as all Goenka centres globally.

What to Expect

The daily schedule begins at 4:30 am with the first meditation session and runs until 9:30 pm. Meals are simple vegetarian and served twice daily. All electronic devices, books, journals, and communication with other students are prohibited during the course. On day ten, Noble Silence is lifted and students may speak before departure on day eleven.

Planning this trip? ๐ŸŽ’

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Many participants describe the ten days as among the most transformative experiences of their lives. Physical discomfort (back pain, restlessness) is common in the first three days. A genuine commitment to the full ten days is required at registration.

FAQ

Can I attend a Vipassana course as a complete beginner?
Yes. No meditation experience is required. The technique is taught from scratch, starting with Anapana (breath awareness) on the first three days before the full Vipassana technique is introduced on day four.

Do I pay for a Vipassana course in Nepal?
All courses are offered free of charge to all students. Accommodation, meals, and teaching are covered entirely by donations from graduates. You are encouraged to donate at the end of your course only if you found the experience valuable.

What should I bring to a ten-day course?
Comfortable loose clothing (shoulders and knees covered), walking shoes, a water bottle, any essential medication, and toiletries. Leave all books, electronics, and jewellery at home or in the facility's storage.
