Nepal Most Scenic Drives Guide
Nepal's roads were built to connect remote communities across extreme terrain. The result is a set of mountain drives of extraordinary beauty, once you accept that progress is measured in hours not kilometres.
Overview
Nepal's most scenic drives are concentrated on the routes that descend from the Himalayan foothills to the plains and the east-west corridors that traverse the country's mid-hills. None are fast; all are rewarding.
The Kathmandu to Pokhara road (Prithvi Highway, 200km, 6-7 hours) follows the Trishuli River through an ever-deepening gorge before climbing to the Pokhara valley. The hour through the Trishuli Gorge at the road's midpoint, where the river is a series of white-water rapids and the hillsides are near-vertical, is Nepal's most widely driven scenic stretch.
The Tribhuvan Highway from Kathmandu to Hetauda (the original mountain road, now less used) descends 2,000m through switchbacks above forested Siwalik ridges with valley panoramas widening at every turn. Daman on this route (2,322m) gives one of the broadest Himalayan panoramas in Nepal on clear mornings.
The road from Pokhara to Jomsom via the Kali Gandaki Gorge corridor climbs through Mustang's dramatic landscape. Even the road-accessible section from Baglung to Jomsom passes through landscapes of increasing aridity and geological drama.
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
The Araniko Highway (Kathmandu to Kodari and the Chinese border) follows the Bhote Kosi gorge through some of the most vertigo-inducing road engineering in Nepal, clinging to gorge walls 500m above the river.
Use Sajilo for point-to-point transfers on these routes when you want to focus on the view rather than the driving.
FAQ
Which scenic drive is most accessible for a day trip from Kathmandu?
The Tribhuvan Highway to Daman and back (approximately 100km each way) makes a long but achievable day trip for the mountain panorama. The Trishuli Gorge section of the Prithvi Highway is seen by anyone on the Kathmandu-Pokhara route.
Is the road to Jomsom suitable for regular vehicles?
The road to Jomsom is rough in sections, particularly above Marpha. A 4WD vehicle with experienced mountain driving is strongly recommended for anything beyond Beni.
