Nepal Primates: Monkeys and Langurs Spotting Guide
Nepal has five primate species ranging from rhesus macaques in Kathmandu's temples to rare Assamese macaques in high forest. Here is where to find each species.
Overview
Nepal's five primate species occupy distinct habitat zones. Rhesus macaques are ubiquitous from the Terai to 2,400m, famously associated with Hindu temples including Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) in Kathmandu and Pashupatinath. Assamese macaques inhabit denser mid-hill forest above 1,500m and are regularly seen in Langtang and Nagarjun Forest Reserve near Kathmandu.
Nepal's two langur species are the most striking. The common grey langur (Hanuman langur) ranges widely from Terai jungle to 3,500m elevation, often in large social groups. The black-footed grey langur โ a recently recognised species split โ is found primarily in the western mid-hills around Rara and Dolpa. A third langur, the Tarai grey langur, occupies lowland Terai grassland edges in Chitwan and Bardia.
Nepal's rarest primate is the golden langur, with a tiny range in the far east near the Bhutan border โ mostly in Kangchenjunga Conservation Area.
For primate watching, Chitwan's buffer zone sal forest is ideal for grey langur and rhesus macaque together. Nagarjun Forest Reserve (Rani Ban) at Kathmandu's edge offers Assamese macaque reliably without leaving the valley. Langtang adds altitude-ranging rhesus and Assamese macaques in scenic mountain forest settings.

FAQ
Are the monkeys at Swayambhunath safe to approach? Maintain distance โ rhesus macaques bite when they associate humans with food. Never offer food to temple monkeys.
Can I see golden langur in Nepal? Sightings are extremely rare and require a permit-accessed expedition to the Kangchenjunga area. Most birding tours do not include this species.
Do primates carry rabies? Macaques can carry rabies. Any bite from a wild primate requires immediate medical assessment and post-exposure prophylaxis.
