Nepal in November What to Do
November extends Nepal's peak season with slightly thinner crowds, cooler temperatures, and the spectacular Tihar festival of lights. It is one of the most underappreciated months to visit.
Overview
November sees Kathmandu at its most atmospheric: Tihar, the festival of lights (Nepal's equivalent of Diwali), transforms the city with oil lamps, marigold garlands, and devotional music. The festival runs for five days in late October or early November, with each day dedicated to a different sacred animal โ crow, dog, cow, ox, and finally siblings. The sight of Kathmandu's streets lit by thousands of oil lamps on the third night (Laxmi Puja) is one of the most beautiful experiences Nepal offers.
Trekking conditions in November are excellent โ skies are clear, trails are dry, and crowds begin to thin after the first week. Temperatures drop noticeably above 4,000 metres; expect sub-zero nights above Namche Bazaar and heavy frosts at Everest Base Camp. Pack accordingly. Mani Rimdu at Tengboche also falls in November in most years.
Cities are pleasant: Kathmandu days average 18-22 degrees C, Pokhara slightly warmer. Chitwan is still hot by day (28-32 degrees C) but evenings are comfortable. November is also the best month for birdwatching in Chitwan and the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.
