Nepal in March Spring Blooms
March marks the beginning of Nepal's spring trekking season, when rhododendron forests turn the lower Himalayan slopes crimson and pink and the days grow warm enough for comfortable high-altitude walking.
Overview
March is when Nepal's forests bloom. Rhododendrons โ Nepal's national flower โ burst into colour from 1,500 metres up to about 3,800 metres, with the peak at different elevations across the month. The Annapurna foothills around Ghorepani and the Langtang Valley are particularly spectacular. The Ghorepani-Poon Hill circuit in March is widely regarded as one of the most visually rewarding short treks in the Himalayas.
Temperatures are mild: 15-22 degrees C in Kathmandu and Pokhara, 5-15 degrees C on trekking trails at 2,000-3,000 metres, and still cold (0 to -5 degrees C at night) above 4,000 metres. Mountain visibility is generally good, though afternoon clouds build more quickly than in autumn. The pre-monsoon haze reduces visibility slightly compared to October-November.
Holi falls in March โ usually mid-month โ and is exuberantly celebrated in Kathmandu and Pokhara. The festival involves coloured powder and water and is a genuinely joyful experience for willing participants. Wear old clothes and protect your camera equipment. Trekking permits and teahouse bookings for March should be arranged at least four to six weeks in advance.
FAQ
Are rhododendrons at full bloom in March?
Lower elevations (1,500-2,000 m) peak in early March; mid elevations (2,500-3,200 m) peak mid-to-late March; higher elevations peak in April. For Ghorepani (2,850 m), mid-to-late March is ideal.
