Nepal in January Cold but Beautiful
January is Nepal's coldest month and one of its quietest — but the crystal-clear skies, empty trails, and dramatically low hotel rates make it an unexpectedly rewarding time to visit for those who pack properly.
Overview
January in Nepal is cold but rarely prohibitive below 3,500 metres. Kathmandu temperatures range from 2 degrees C at night to 18 degrees C at midday — cool enough for comfortable sightseeing with a jacket and warm enough for outdoor activity in the afternoons. Pokhara is slightly warmer (5-20 degrees C). The Terai region (Chitwan, Lumbini, Bardia) is pleasant in January with warm days (22-25 degrees C) and cool nights — some of the best weather in the country.
Above 3,500 metres, January is genuinely cold: -10 to -20 degrees C at night, ice on trails, and the risk of snowfall blocking high passes. The Annapurna Circuit high passes are typically closed. The lower Annapurna foothills (below Ghorepani), the Everest area to Namche Bazaar, and the Langtang Valley to Kyanjin Gompa are all accessible with proper winter gear.
The Maghe Sankranti festival falls in mid-January — a Hindu harvest festival celebrated with bathing in sacred rivers and eating sesame sweets and ghee. The Bagmati River in Kathmandu draws thousands of devotees for dawn baths. Prices for accommodation in January are 20-35% lower than October-November.
