Overview

The Kali Gandaki Gorge between the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs is considered the world's deepest gorge by vertical relief. The river flows at 2,400m between peaks that rise to 8,167m and 8,091m respectively, a differential of nearly 6,000m on each side. The gorge is traversable by road to Kagbeni in Upper Mustang, putting you at the bottom of this geological wonder without trekking.

The Bhote Kosi Gorge on the Araniko Highway (the road to Tibet from Kathmandu) cuts through extraordinary steep terrain that has made it the premier commercial white water rafting river in the Kathmandu region. The road clings to the gorge wall for 50km north of Lamosangu, passing through tunnels and over bridges that inspire vertigo in passengers not used to the exposure.

The Seti Gandaki River in Pokhara cuts an invisible gorge through the city itself โ€” the river flows underground through a gorge too narrow for light to enter, emerging at various points as a rushing white torrent glimpsed through slits in the rock. The Prithvi Narayan Campus viewpoint allows a look down into the gorge.

The Marsyangdi River canyon, followed by the Annapurna Circuit road toward Besisahar and Chame, involves repeated crossings of a gorge that tightens dramatically as elevation increases. The canyon walls develop pine forest that gives way to alpine scrub as you climb.

FAQ

Is the Kali Gandaki gorge accessible without trekking?
Yes. The road from Pokhara through Baglung and Beni reaches Jomsom in the upper gorge. A rough day's drive from Pokhara puts you deep inside the gorge landscape.

Is the Bhote Kosi gorge road safe?
The road is maintained and widely used for rafting tours. It is narrow with steep drops in sections. Driving during daylight in a vehicle with good clearance is advisable.
