Nepal Coins: From Barter to Rupee
Nepal's monetary history spans ancient barter economies, the silver coinage of the Malla kings, and today's Nepali Rupee. Coins reflect the political and economic history of a kingdom that shaped its own destiny.
Nepal's numismatic history mirrors its political history โ a sequence of dynasties, each minting coins that expressed their legitimacy and cosmological worldview.
Overview
Before coinage, the Kathmandu Valley's economy operated through barter and grain-based exchange. The Licchavi period (4th-9th century CE) saw the introduction of the first Nepali coins โ small silver panchamarks (punch-marked coins) influenced by Indian currency systems. The Malla kings transformed Nepali coinage into a distinctly local art form. Malla silver coins featured Sanskrit inscriptions of the king's name, distinctive symbols (conch shells, fish, swords), and the denomination โ typically mohar units. The mohar became the standard Nepali monetary unit for centuries. Each of the three Malla kingdoms minted their own coins, creating a de facto monetary competition paralleling their artistic rivalry. Counterfeit Malla coins were a documented problem as early as the 15th century. After Prithvi Narayan Shah's unification, the Shah dynasty standardised the coinage. King Rajendra Shah introduced the Rupee as Nepal's base currency in the 19th century, aligned with the Indian Rupee system introduced by the British. The modern Nepali Rupee (NPR) has been issued by Nepal Rastra Bank since its establishment in 1956. The Nepali Rupee trades at approximately 1.6 NPR to 1 Indian Rupee โ a peg maintained through periodic adjustment. Current coins feature Sagarmatha (Everest) and the national emblem.
