Nepal's most visited caves are concentrated in the Pokhara valley and the Mustang region. Pokhara holds two accessible cave systems: Mahendra Cave (electric lighting, stalactite formations, easy walk-through) and Bat Cave (narrow passage requiring a squeeze, resident bat colony). Both are in the Baidam Batulechaur area north of Lakeside and manageable in a single morning.
Siddha Cave near Bandipur is one of Nepal's largest cave systems. A 20-minute hike from the road leads to a cave entrance that opens into a large chamber with significant stalactite and stalagmite formations. No artificial lighting; bring a torch. The natural setting in the forested hills above the Marsyangdi Valley adds to the atmosphere.
Gupteshwor Cave in Pokhara is a Hindu pilgrimage site with a natural cavern connected underground to Devi's Fall. The cave is illuminated and includes Shiva shrines at various depths. The final chamber has a window onto the base of Devi's Fall that provides a unique underground perspective on the waterfall above.
In Mustang district, the Jhong Cave system contains ancient cave dwellings carved into cliff faces, some with painted Buddhist frescoes dating to the 11th-14th centuries. These are part of the same cliff-dwelling culture that created the famous Mustang sky caves and are accessible on the restricted Mustang circuit.
