Nepal in April Trekking Season Peaks

Overview

April is one of Nepal's two peak trekking months (alongside October) and arguably the most visually spectacular — rhododendron forests at 2,500-3,800 metres are in full bloom, painting entire hillsides in crimson, pink, and white. The Annapurna region is particularly dramatic: the Ghorepani-Poon Hill trail passes through some of the densest rhododendron forests in Asia. The Langtang Valley, usually overlooked in favour of Everest and Annapurna, is another outstanding April destination with beautiful forest and meadow walking.

Temperatures are ideal for trekking: 12-20 degrees C during the day at 2,500-3,500 metres, dropping to 0-5 degrees C at night. The skies are generally clear in the mornings with clouds building in the afternoons — plan high-altitude summit attempts and viewpoint visits for early morning. Everest expedition season begins in April, and the sight of laden expedition teams heading up the Khumbu Valley adds an atmosphere of adventure to the Namche-to-base-camp trail.

The Hindu festival of Ram Navami (celebrating the birth of Lord Ram) falls in April and is celebrated with devotion in Janakpur and major temples across the country. Buddha Jayanti (the Buddha's birthday) may also fall in late April or May depending on the lunar calendar.

FAQ

Is April crowded on Nepal's trekking trails?
Yes — April is peak season on all major routes. Book teahouses and domestic flights at least six weeks in advance. The Poon Hill sunrise can draw 200-400 trekkers; start early to get the best position.

Can I see rhododendrons in April at Everest Base Camp?
Rhododendrons grow up to about 4,000 metres. Below Namche Bazaar and around Phakding you will see blooming trees in April. Above Namche the landscape transitions to high-altitude scrub and the blooms are largely over by mid-April at those elevations.
