Nepal 7 Days Best Possible Itinerary

Seven days in Nepal is enough to experience Kathmandu's UNESCO heritage squares, the mountains above Pokhara, and a short trek — if you plan carefully. This itinerary does exactly that.

Overview

Seven days is the most common duration for a first trip to Nepal, and with smart planning it delivers an excellent cross-section of the country. The itinerary below balances Kathmandu Valley heritage, a mountain flight, the Pokhara lakeside, and a short trek to a viewpoint — without requiring prior trekking fitness or excessive expenditure.

Days 1-2: Kathmandu Valley

Arrive in Kathmandu. Day one: recover from the flight, explore Thamel, and visit Pashupatinath Temple and Boudhanath Stupa in the afternoon. Day two: Kathmandu Durbar Square in the morning, Swayambhunath Stupa at sunset. Hire a guide for the durbar squares — the historical context makes the carvings and temples far more meaningful. Book your mountain flight for day three's early morning.

Days 3-4: Pokhara

Day three: 25-minute mountain flight at dawn (Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang all visible on clear days), then a tourist bus or 35-minute flight to Pokhara. Afternoon on Phewa Lake — rent a rowboat and visit the Barahi Temple on the island. Day four: sunrise at Sarangkot viewpoint (arrange a taxi the night before for a 5 am departure), then a paragliding flight over the valley if budget allows, afternoon at the International Mountain Museum.

Days 5-6: Ghorepani Trek

Day five: Drive or take a local jeep to Nayapul (1.5 hours from Pokhara) and trek to Tikhedhunga or Ulleri. Day six: Continue to Ghorepani and climb Poon Hill (3,210 m) for sunrise views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre, and on clear mornings, Annapurna I. Return to Pokhara by afternoon via Nayapul. This is a moderate two-day trek — total walking four to five hours per day on well-maintained stone steps.

FAQ

Do I need to book the mountain flight in advance?
Yes. Mountain flights depart only in clear weather and seats fill quickly in peak season (October and April). Book at least three to four days ahead through your hotel or a licensed agency.

Is the Poon Hill trek suitable for non-trekkers?
Poon Hill is Nepal's most popular short trek precisely because it is accessible to fit non-trekkers. The stone steps are steep but the daily distances are short. Basic teahouse accommodation is comfortable and food is good.

What does a 7-day Nepal trip cost?
A comfortable mid-range trip costs USD 80-120 per day including accommodation, food, local transport, and entry fees. Budget travellers can do it for USD 35-50 per day in teahouses and local restaurants.
