Nepal 5 Day Highlights Itinerary
Five days in Nepal can feel rushed but this tight itinerary hits the essential highlights — Kathmandu heritage, a mountain flight, Pokhara's lakeside, and Poon Hill — without sacrificing quality at any stop.
Overview
Five days is a common duration for transit visitors, stopover travellers, or those who have only a small window in a longer Asia trip. The key is to make every hour count without creating a schedule so dense that it stops being enjoyable. This itinerary prioritises quality over quantity: two focused days in Kathmandu, a mountain flight, two days in Pokhara including Poon Hill, and a return flight to Kathmandu for departure.
Day 1: Kathmandu Arrival
Land in Kathmandu. Afternoon: Boudhanath Stupa (essential; buy a simple prayer flag as an offering and do a few circuits of the mandala). Evening: Thamel walk and dinner. Book mountain flight for the next morning before 9 pm through any licensed travel desk in Thamel.
Day 2: Mountain Flight and Kathmandu Heritage
Early morning mountain flight (one hour, departs 6:30 am, returns 8 am). Breakfast, then full morning at Pashupatinath Temple. After lunch, choose one of: Patan Durbar Square and museum (recommended for architecture enthusiasts) or Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square (recommended for first-time visitors). Evening flight or bus to Pokhara — flight is 35 minutes, tourist bus is six hours, night bus saves a day.
Day 3: Pokhara
Full day in Pokhara. Phewa Lake rowboat to Barahi Temple island. Davis Falls and Gupteshwor Cave. International Mountain Museum (allow two hours). Lakeside dinner with Annapurna backdrop. Arrange transport to Sarangkot for 5 am departure on day four.
Planning this trip? 🎒
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Day 4: Poon Hill Trek
Drive to Nayapul (90 minutes from Pokhara), trek to Tikhedhunga or Ghorepani depending on fitness. Full-day walk of five to six hours. Teahouse accommodation. If you cannot complete the two-day Poon Hill circuit, the day hike from Nayapul to Ulleri viewpoint and back is an excellent one-day alternative with mountain views.
Day 5: Return to Kathmandu
Return to Pokhara by jeep from Nayapul (90 minutes). Fly back to Kathmandu (35 minutes). Remaining hours for Asan Bazaar shopping. Depart from Tribhuvan International.
FAQ
Is it worth flying between Kathmandu and Pokhara?
Yes, for a five-day trip. The flight is 35 minutes versus six hours by bus. The cost difference (approximately USD 80-100 one way) is worth it when time is limited.
Can I do Poon Hill in one day from Pokhara?
The full Poon Hill summit experience requires an overnight stay at Ghorepani. A day hike from Nayapul to the first viewpoints and back is possible but does not reach Poon Hill itself.
Do I need permits for a short Poon Hill trek?
Yes — a TIMS card (NPR 2,000) and ACAP permit (NPR 3,000) are required. Both can be arranged at the checkpoint in Nayapul on the day.
