Overview

Namobuddha (also spelled Namo Buddha) sits on a forested ridge 38km east of Kathmandu in the Kavrepalanchok district. The site marks the place where, according to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Prince Mahasattva gave his body to a starving tigress and her cubs โ€” an act of supreme compassion that the Jataka Tales record as a previous life of the historical Buddha. A stone stupa on the ridge commemorates the event; the painted scene covers tablets and tiles throughout the complex.

The Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery is a large and active Tibetan Buddhist monastery built on the ridge near the main stupa. The monastery buildings, scattered across the hill with the main temple, monks' quarters, and prayer hall, are all open to respectful visitors. The views from the ridge take in the Kathmandu Valley to the west and open Himalayan foothills to the north.

Most visitors combine Namobuddha with nearby Dhulikhel on a day trip. The 2-3 hour trail connecting the two is one of the most pleasant walking routes in the Kathmandu valley environs, passing through pine forest and small Tamang villages. From Dhulikhel you can pick up a vehicle arranged via Sajilo for the return to Kathmandu.
