Your acclimatisation day in Namche Bazaar is too valuable to waste resting. Here is the perfect day hike, coffee shop, and gear shop plan.

Namche Bazaar (3,440m) is the commercial hub of the Khumbu and the mandatory first acclimatisation stop on the EBC trek. A proper rest day here is not optional โ€” skipping it is the leading cause of AMS on the upper trail.

Overview

The standard acclimatisation protocol is to sleep two nights in Namche, doing a high day hike on the rest day. The best option is the hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m) via Syangboche, adding 440m of altitude before returning to sleep low. The circuit takes 3-4 hours and rewards with direct views of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam above the clouds. Namche also has the best gear shops, bakeries, and coffee on the entire trail. Arrive from Kathmandu the previous day using Sajilo to catch your early Lukla flight.

FAQ

Why two nights in Namche? Your blood needs time to produce more red blood cells. One night is insufficient at this altitude step โ€” AMS rates drop significantly with a second night.

What should I do on the acclimatisation hike? Hike high, sleep low. The Syangboche/Everest View Hotel route is ideal. Avoid hiking past 4,000m on your rest day.
