Overview
Muktinath Temple stands at 3,800 metres in the Mustang district of northwestern Nepal, near the Tibetan border. The name means Place of Salvation and the site is sacred to both Vaishnavite Hindus, who count it among the 108 Divya Desams, and Tibetan Buddhists, who call it Chumig Gyatsa meaning Hundred Waters. The main temple houses a brass image of Vishnu. Surrounding it are 108 waterspouts in the form of cow heads, through which spring water flows year-round. Bathing under all 108 is considered an act of extreme purification.
Getting There
Most visitors fly from Kathmandu or Pokhara to Jomsom (35 minutes) and then take a jeep north to Ranipauwa village, the trailhead for Muktinath. The jeep ride takes about an hour on a rough mountain road. Alternatively, trekkers complete the Annapurna Circuit and approach from the south via Kagbeni and Jharkot — a two to three day walk from Jomsom.
The Shrine Complex
The main Vishnu temple is the first point of worship. Priests perform puja in the morning and evening. Just north of the Vishnu temple is the Buddhist gompa of Jwala Mai, which shelters an eternal flame fed by natural gas seeping through the ground — a phenomenon that draws pilgrims from across South Asia. The 108 waterspouts form a semicircle behind the main shrine and are always busy with devotees bathing despite the icy temperature.
Acclimatisation and Altitude
At 3,800 metres, altitude sickness is a real risk for visitors arriving directly from Jomsom (2,720 m). Spend at least one night in Jomsom before ascending. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol on the first day, and descend immediately if you experience persistent headache, confusion, or vomiting. The drive from Jomsom to Muktinath takes about an hour and gains over 1,000 metres — the rapid elevation change catches many visitors off guard.

Do I need a special permit to visit Muktinath?
Yes. Muktinath is inside the Annapurna Conservation Area, which requires an ACAP permit (NPR 3,000). Mustang district also requires a Restricted Area Permit costing USD 500 for 10 days for the Upper Mustang section north of Kagbeni. Muktinath itself is in Lower Mustang and does not require the USD 500 permit.
What is the best time to visit Muktinath?
April to June and September to November are the clearest months. The site is accessible year-round by jeep from Jomsom, though winter (December to February) brings snow and very cold nights.
Is accommodation available near Muktinath?
Yes. Ranipauwa village has several teahouses and basic guesthouses. Book in advance during peak trekking season (October and April).
