Mountain Biking in Nepal: Epic Routes Through the Himalayas

Singletrack, high passes, and village descents make Nepal one of Asia's most rewarding mountain biking destinations.

Overview

Nepal's network of trekking trails, village paths, and ancient trade routes doubles as an extraordinary mountain biking playground. The terrain ranges from technical singletrack through rhododendron forests to high-altitude gravel roads crossing passes above 5,000 metres. Key routes include the Kathmandu Valley rim trail (1–2 days), the Annapurna Circuit by bike (12–18 days), and the Mustang trail (7–10 days through the rain shadow desert). Unlike trekking, biking allows you to cover ground quickly and experience the landscape shift from subtropical jungle to alpine tundra within a single trip.

Skill Levels

The Kathmandu Valley rim and the Pokhara–Sarangkot loop are suitable for intermediate riders comfortable on gravel and moderate descents. The Annapurna Circuit by bike demands fitness for long climbs β€” Thorong La at 5,416 metres is a push-and-carry section for most β€” and confidence on loose rocky descents. The Mustang trail through Lo Manthang involves remote riding where mechanical self-sufficiency is essential. The most popular guided descent is the Himalayan Single Trail descending from Shivapuri National Park into Kathmandu β€” around 2,000 metres of drop in 25 km.

Bike Rental and Guides

Thamel and Lakeside Pokhara have several reputable bike shops renting quality hardtails and full-suspension bikes by the day (NPR 1,500–4,000 per day). Bring your own helmet if possible; rental helmets vary in condition. Guided multi-day trips including bike, accommodation, meals, and a support vehicle run NPR 8,000 to NPR 15,000 per day per person depending on group size.

Permits

The Annapurna Circuit requires the ACAP permit (NPR 3,000) and TIMS card (NPR 2,000). Mustang requires the Restricted Area Permit (USD 500 for 10 days). Bikes on restricted-area routes must be declared on your permit application.

FAQ

Q: Can I ride during monsoon?

The rain shadow regions of Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo are rideable even in monsoon. Most other routes become very slippery and trail erosion is significant β€” June to August is generally avoided.

Q: Are there bike repair shops on the trail?

In larger villages like Jomsom, Manang, and Besisahar there are basic repair services. Carry spare tubes, a pump, chain lube, and a multi-tool β€” do not rely on finding parts in remote sections.

Q: What fitness level is needed for the Annapurna Circuit?

You should be comfortable cycling 50–80 km per day on mixed terrain. The high altitude adds significant effort β€” acclimatise properly and do not rush the ascent to Thorong La.
