Himalayan Monal: Nepal's National Bird Spotting Guide
The Himalayan monal is Nepal's national bird and one of Asia's most spectacular pheasants. Males display iridescent plumage rivalling any bird on Earth. Here is where and when to find them.
Overview
The Himalayan monal (Lophophorus impejanus) inhabits steep alpine meadows and forest edges between 2,500m and 5,000m across Nepal's mid and high hills. Males display extraordinary iridescent plumage โ metallic green, copper, purple, and blue โ visible at remarkable distance on open slopes. Females are cryptically brown. The species is most visible in late winter and spring when males display to attract females on open grassy ridges.
The best locations in Nepal are Langtang National Park (particularly above Ghoda Tabela toward Lauribina), Helambu (Thadepati ridge), Gosaikunda area, and Kalinchowk in Dolakha district โ the most accessible site from Kathmandu. Phulchoki hill south of Kathmandu occasionally records monal at its upper reaches in cold months.
Dawn is the essential time. Males emerge from forest cover onto open slopes to feed on bulbs and insects. They are wary of direct approach but tolerate patient observers at distances of 30m or more when approached slowly from below (uphill puts your silhouette against the sky and alarms them).
March and April are prime months โ males in full breeding condition, displaying with spread tail and raised crest. October and November offer clear visibility and reliable sightings as birds move lower with snowfall. Summer monsoon drives them higher and makes access difficult.
