Mera Peak (6,476m) sits in the Hinku valley south of the Khumbu and is classified as a Nepal Mountaineering Association trekking peak β€” non-technical but demanding significant acclimatisation.

Overview

The standard route approaches from Lukla via the Zatrwa La (4,610m) into the Hinku valley, then up through Kote, Thangnak, and Khare (5,045m) to the high camp (5,800m) and summit ridge. Total duration: 18-21 days from Kathmandu. The summit is broad and snowy with no technical rock or ice climbing β€” crampons and rope travel in a guided party are all that is required. From the top, five of the world six highest peaks are visible: Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Fly to Lukla via Kathmandu; a Sajilo cab ensures you reach the airport on time for the morning mountain flight.

Getting There

Fly Kathmandu–Lukla (35 min). From Lukla, the route diverges from EBC at Chutanga, crossing the Zatrwa La into the Hinku valley. No road access to the trailhead.

Key Highlights

The Hinku valley is one of Nepal wildest: no roads, minimal tourist infrastructure, and only a handful of small lodges at Kote and Thangnak. The high camp plateau above 5,800m gives the feel of true high-altitude mountaineering. Summit day covers a 700m ascent on snow with a gradual angle β€” physical endurance matters more than technical skill.

Tips

  • Acclimatise properly: at least two nights at Khare (5,045m) before the summit push.
  • Nepal Mountaineering Association permit (NPR 25,000 peak season, NPR 17,500 off-season) required.
  • Hire a certified guide β€” crevasse navigation on the upper glacier requires expert knowledge.
  • Travel insurance to 7,000m with helicopter evacuation cover is mandatory.

FAQ

Is Mera Peak suitable for first-time mountaineers? Yes, with proper preparation. Previous high-altitude trekking experience (above 5,000m) is strongly recommended before attempting Mera.

What is the summit altitude? 6,476m β€” the highest of any Nepal trekking peak, higher than any point in the Alps or Andes.

What is the success rate? Around 65-75% for guided groups in good conditions. Altitude sickness and bad weather cause most failed bids.
