Mount Manaslu: An Expedition Overview

At 8,163 metres, Manaslu is Nepal's highest peak outside the Khumbu region. Its trekking circuit and summit routes offer a less crowded alternative to Everest and Annapurna.

Manaslu, whose name derives from the Sanskrit word for Spirit Mountain, dominates the Gorkha district of western Nepal.

Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek (approximately 15-18 days) circumnavigates the massif through remote villages, Buddhist shrines, and high passes, including the dramatic Larkya La at 5,160m. The trek requires a restricted area permit in addition to standard trekking permits, keeping visitor numbers lower than Annapurna and EBC. First climbed on 9 May 1956 by Japanese mountaineer Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu Sherpa, Manaslu has hosted more Japanese expeditions than any other eight-thousander โ€” the Japanese Alpine Club considers it a historic peak. The standard summit route ascends the northeast face and east ridge, with base camp established on the Budhi Gandaki glacier at around 4,800m. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the optimal seasons. An average of 200-300 climbers attempt the mountain each season with a summit success rate of roughly 40%. Fatalities on Manaslu are significantly lower than on peaks like Annapurna I or Nanga Parbat.

FAQ
