Trekking Manaslu Circuit in Monsoon Season: The Rain Shadow Advantage
The northern sections of the Manaslu Circuit lie in a Himalayan rain shadow — making parts of the route trekable even during monsoon. Here is what you can expect from June to September on Manaslu.
The Manaslu Circuit is primarily known as an autumn or spring trek, but experienced trekkers with the right knowledge can explore the northern rain-shadow sections during monsoon.
Overview
The southern sections (Arughat to Namrung) receive heavy monsoon rainfall June–September. The northern sections above Namrung (3,200m) — Sama Gaun, Samdo, and toward Larkya La — are significantly drier due to the rain shadow effect of the main Himalayan range.
Best Time for Monsoon Trekking
July–August is the driest in the rain shadow north. However, the southern approach trail can be slippery and leeches are present below 2,500m.
Key Highlights
Monsoon offers lush green landscapes, waterfalls, and almost no other trekkers. The villages of Sama Gaun and Samdo are especially atmospheric in summer.

Practical Tips
Gear up with excellent waterproofs for the southern sections. Gaiters recommended for the leech zones below 2,000m. Larkya La crossing during monsoon is not recommended — save that for October.
FAQ
Is monsoon Manaslu safe? The northern sections are manageable. The southern approach has increased landslide risk and should be assessed locally.
Are permits cheaper during monsoon? Yes — the restricted area permit is NPR 20,000 during monsoon vs NPR 35,000 in Oct–Nov.
Will I have the trail to myself? Almost entirely — monsoon is the quietest time on this already-quiet route.
