Lumbini Buddhist Circuit Guide
The Lumbini Buddhist Circuit connects the birthplace of the Buddha with surrounding sites of pilgrimage significance in a 2-day loop that reveals the full depth of the sacred landscape.
The Circuit Concept
Lumbini is the centre of a wider landscape of Buddhist significance in the Terai. Within 50km, several additional sites connect to the Buddha's birth story and the subsequent spread of Buddhism. The circuit can be driven in 2 days from a Lumbini base or from Bhairahawa, covering the main complex and the surrounding pilgrimage points.
Day One: Lumbini Development Zone
Start at the Maya Devi Temple in the Sacred Garden for sunrise. The pilgrimage atmosphere at dawn, with monks walking kora around the main stupa while mist still hangs over the Puskarini Pond, is among the most peaceful experiences the Terai offers. Work through the archaeological zone methodically โ the excavated foundations tell the story of 2,000 years of continuous pilgrimage.
Spend the morning cycling through the monastic zone on both sides of the central canal. Target six to eight monasteries with time to go inside each. The Tibetan and German monasteries are the most distinct architecturally. Lunch at the cafe within one of the Korean or Japanese monastery complexes.
Afternoon: the World Peace Pagoda on the eastern monastic zone's rim, followed by the Lumbini Museum and the Eternal Peace Flame at the northern end of the canal. Evening: return to Bhairahawa accommodation.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Day Two: Tilaurakot and Kudan
Tilaurakot, 27km west of Lumbini, is identified by many scholars as the ruins of ancient Kapilavastu, the kingdom where Siddhartha Gautama grew up as a prince before his renunciation. The excavated site shows palace foundations, city gates, and moats dating to the era when the future Buddha lived here.
Nearby Kudan marks the site where, according to tradition, the Buddha returned to visit his father after his Enlightenment. A stupa and brick foundations mark the location. Gotihawa, a further 14km, holds the broken Ashoka Pillar marking the birthplace of a previous Buddha โ the landscape of broken columns in fields creates an evocative archaeological atmosphere.
Use Sajilo to cover the outer circuit sites, where public transport connections are poor and the distances between sites make a private vehicle essential for completing the circuit in two days.
Practical Notes
All outer circuit sites are free to enter or charge minimal fees. The roads between sites are paved but narrow. Early morning visits to Tilaurakot before tour groups arrive from Lumbini give the ruins a genuine archaeological quality.
