Overview

The Lumbini Development Zone is laid out along a 3km central canal with monasteries built by Buddhist nations flanking either side. At the northern end sits the Sacred Garden, the archaeological heart of the site. Begin there at sunrise with the Maya Devi Temple, which marks the precise birthplace of the Buddha. Inside, a glass floor reveals excavated foundations dating back over 2,000 years, and the Ashoka Pillar erected in 249 BCE stands just outside.

After the Sacred Garden, cycle or take an electric vehicle south along the canal. The eastern monastic zone holds Theravada monasteries from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia. The western zone holds Mahayana and Vajrayana monasteries from Tibet, China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. Each monastery is architecturally distinct, reflecting the national style of its builders. The Japanese Peace Pagoda and the German Dhamma Chakra Monastery are particularly striking.

Sajilo can connect you with drivers from nearby Bhairahawa town, which has the closest airport and bus connections to Kathmandu and Pokhara.
