The Licchavi Dynasty: Art and Architecture of Early Nepal
The Licchavi rulers of the Kathmandu Valley created Nepal's first great artistic tradition between the 4th and 9th centuries. Their stone sculptures and temple foundations still define Nepal's sacred landscape.
The Licchavi dynasty represents Nepal's first historically documented period of political and artistic sophistication โ a golden age that set the template for all subsequent Kathmandu Valley culture.
Overview
Licchavi inscriptions, carved on stone slabs throughout the Kathmandu Valley, are among the earliest written records from Nepal. They record royal genealogies, temple endowments, and legal decrees in Sanskrit. The most celebrated is the Changu Narayan inscription of 464 CE, which describes King Manadeva I's military campaigns and is Nepal's oldest surviving inscription. Licchavi sculptors worked primarily in stone, creating figures of Vishnu, Shiva, and the Buddha in a style that blends Indian Gupta-period aesthetics with distinctly Nepali local traditions. The Vishnu Vikranta panel at Changu Narayan โ showing Vishnu's three cosmic strides โ is considered the finest example of Licchavi stone carving. The Licchavis also patronised the expansion of Pashupatinath temple complex and the construction of Swayambhunath stupa's main dome. Relations with the Gupta Empire of India and early Tibet under Songtsen Gampo shaped their politics โ Licchavi princess Bhrikuti married the Tibetan king and is credited with bringing Buddhism to Tibet.
