Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, straddling the Koshi River barrage in Sunsari district, is Nepal's only Ramsar Wetland Site and holds one of South Asia's most remarkable bird lists for its compact 175 sq km area.

Why Koshi Tappu

The Koshi River's braided channel system, seasonal grasslands, and oxbow lakes create habitat for an exceptional range of waterbirds, grassland specialists, and raptors. Over 500 species have been recorded. The site sits on the Central Asian Flyway, meaning winter brings massive influxes of ducks, waders, and raptors from Siberia and Central Asia.

Key Species

Critically Endangered: Baer's pochard, Indian skimmer (breeds on Koshi bars), Bengal florican (adjacent grassland).

Rare or localised: Pallas's fish eagle (November–March), black-bellied tern, spotted greenshank (passage), river lapwing.

Planning this trip? 🎒

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Common but spectacular: Lesser adjutant stork (year-round), painted stork, Asian openbill (large breeding colony), sarus crane pairs, Ruddy shelduck.

Raptors: Pallid harrier, pied harrier, greater spotted eagle, imperial eagle, red-headed vulture all winter regularly.

Best Circuits

Koshi Barrage road (dawn walk): Walk the eastern embankment at first light for terns skimming the water, herons fishing, and raptors on posts. One to two hours.

Boat safari on the main channel: The only way to access mid-river islands where Indian skimmer breeds (April–June). Also productive for gharial, river dolphin, and Gangetic mugger. Request the sunrise departure.

Grassland transects (September–March): Drive or walk the agricultural fringe south of the barrage for Bengal florican males displaying at dawn, spotted deer, and wild boar.

Koshi Tappu north zone (inside reserve): Full-day jeep safari covering the oxbow lakes and sal forest edge for greater adjutant, black stork, and Stork-billed kingfisher.

Season

November–February is peak season. Water levels drop, concentrating fish and waterbirds. Raptors and ducks at maximum. Cold mornings but comfortable afternoons.

March–April adds breeding activity — painted stork and Asian openbill nesting, skimmer displaying on bars. Warmer but still excellent.

Monsoon (June–September): The reserve floods and access is restricted. Not recommended for casual visitors.

Logistics

Koshi Tappu is a four-hour drive from Kathmandu via the Araniko Highway to Biratnagar, then south. Alternatively, fly to Biratnagar and drive 45 minutes. Several lodges operate inside the buffer zone; book in advance during November–February peak.

FAQ

Do I need a permit? Yes, reserve entry fee applies. A local naturalist guide is strongly recommended and arranged through lodges.

Can I combine Koshi Tappu with Chitwan? Yes, but they are on opposite sides of Nepal. Fly Kathmandu–Biratnagar for Koshi, then fly Kathmandu–Bharatpur for Chitwan on separate legs.

Is a spotting scope essential? Highly recommended for the open water and barrage sections. Forest sections are fine with binoculars.
