Kopan Monastery Meditation Retreat Guide
Kopan Monastery above Boudhanath is one of the most respected Tibetan Buddhist retreat centres in the world, offering everything from one-day visits to month-long courses. Here is how to plan your time there.
Overview
Kopan Monastery crowns a small hill on the northern outskirts of Kathmandu, overlooking the Boudhanath Stupa below. Founded in 1969 by Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche, Kopan has grown into one of the principal teaching centres of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet. Resident monks and nuns number in the hundreds, and the monastery's annual November course โ a month-long intensive introduction to Buddhist philosophy โ attracts students from more than 50 countries.
Visiting as a Day Guest
Day visitors are welcome at Kopan. The monastery grounds include the main assembly hall, the large stupa, several smaller temples, and beautifully maintained gardens with views across the valley. A small shop sells books, thangkas, and dharma supplies. The coffee shop in the garden is a welcome stop. No prior booking is required for a day visit. Dress modestly and maintain silence near the assembly hall during teaching sessions.
Courses and Retreats
Kopan's programme ranges from weekend introduction courses to the famous month-long November course. There are also week-long retreats focused on specific practices (loving-kindness, tonglen, Vajrasattva purification). All courses are donation-based or offered at modest fixed fees. Accommodation on the hill is basic but comfortable โ dormitories and private rooms are available. Food is vegetarian and excellent. Apply well in advance for all residential programmes through the Kopan website.
Practical Information
Kopan is about six kilometres from central Kathmandu. Taxis take 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic. A scooter or app-based ride is the easiest option. The road to the monastery from Boudhanath is steep and unpaved for the last kilometre. The monastery is at approximately 1,450 metres โ no altitude concerns.
