Kirtipur Ancient Hill Town Guide
Kirtipur is the forgotten city of the Kathmandu Valley, a Newar hill town that resisted the Gorkha conquest longer than any other and retains a proud, independent character.
Overview
Kirtipur sits on a twin-peaked ridge 5km southwest of Kathmandu, looking down on the valley from 1,395m. It was the last city to fall to Prithvi Narayan Shah's Gorkha forces in the 18th century unification of Nepal, and the harsh punishment inflicted on its people after the siege left a cultural memory that Kirtipur has not entirely forgotten. The city has its own distinctive identity separate from Kathmandu, Patan, and Bhaktapur.
The Chilanchu Stupa on the northern hill and the Uma Maheshwor Temple on the southern hill anchor the two peaks of the ridge. The connecting street of the old town passes through a densely built fabric of traditional houses in various states of preservation and decay. Unlike the three main Durbar Squares, Kirtipur receives very few tourists and retains a genuinely local character โ children playing, women weaving in doorways, and elderly men gathered at the temple steps in the afternoon sun.
Tribhuvan University's main campus occupies the flatland below the Kirtipur ridge, giving the area a young population that has created a small cluster of cafes and budget eateries at the base of the hill.
Use Sajilo to reach Kirtipur without the complexity of Kathmandu's ring road traffic, which can confuse even experienced drivers from the city centre.

FAQ
Is Kirtipur included in the Kathmandu heritage zone entry?
No separate entry fee is charged at Kirtipur. It is one of the valley's heritage towns accessible without tickets, which is part of why it remains less visited.
What is the best time to visit Kirtipur?
Late afternoon when the light falls across the old town and residents gather in public spaces. The hill offers a different perspective on the valley than Nagarkot or Sarangkot.
