Overview

The Kathmandu Valley's Buddhist monasteries span 1,500 years of practice across Theravada, Vajrayana, Tibetan, and Newar Buddhist traditions. No other valley in the world holds this density and diversity of active monastic life.

Boudhanath is the centre of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal, with 50+ monasteries encircling the great stupa. The most significant include Shechen Tennyi Dargyeling (Nyingma) and Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling. Dawn circumambulation with monks and practitioners begins at 5:30am and is the most atmospheric time to visit.

Swayambhunath holds a mix of Vajrayana and Theravada shrines clustered around the hilltop stupa. The Karma Raj Mahavihar at the base of the eastern staircase is a significant Newar Buddhist monastery worth visiting separately from the main stupa complex.

Kopan Monastery on a hill north of Boudhanath offers regular meditation courses and is architecturally striking. It is open to visitors outside course periods.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

The Newar Buddhist bahals of Patan โ€” Uku Bahal, Hiranya Varna Mahavihar, and the Royal Monastery complex โ€” represent a completely separate tradition of Buddhist practice unique to the Kathmandu Valley. Sajilo can help connect you with the less central monastery locations including Kopan and the Patan bahals.

FAQ

Can non-Buddhists visit all these monasteries?
Yes. Respectful visitors are welcome at most. Kopan requires advance notice for retreat areas. Inner shrines may require removing shoes and modest dress.

What is the difference between a Newar bahal and a Tibetan monastery?
A Newar bahal is a courtyard monastery embedded in an urban neighbourhood, often indistinguishable from surrounding houses from the outside. Tibetan monasteries typically have a more distinct architectural presence with prayer halls, assembly rooms, and separate monks' quarters.
