Day One: Durbar Squares and Old City

Start your Kathmandu journey at Kathmandu Durbar Square, the ancient royal palace complex that anchors the old city. Arrive before 9am to beat the crowds and the heat. The square holds over 50 temples, courtyards, and monuments spanning several centuries of Newar architecture. The Taleju Temple, Kumari Ghar (home of the living goddess), and the black-stone idol of Kala Bhairab are unmissable. Hire a local guide at the entrance for deeper context on the mythology woven into every carved window and gilded roof.

After the Durbar Square, walk north through the narrow lanes of Indra Chowk and Ason Bazaar. These trading crossroads have operated for over a thousand years. Spice sellers, bead shops, and vegetable vendors press in on every side. Stop for a plate of choila and beaten rice at a local bhatti before continuing to Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa known internationally as the Monkey Temple. The 365-step climb rewards you with panoramic views of the valley.

Day Two: Boudhanath and Pashupatinath

Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest stupas in the world and the spiritual heart of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. Arrive at sunrise when monks and pilgrims walk the kora, spinning prayer wheels in the golden morning light. The encircling ring of monasteries, thangka shops, and rooftop cafes makes this area easy to spend an entire morning in.

In the afternoon, visit Pashupatinath Temple complex on the banks of the Bagmati River. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple but the surrounding ghats, forests of lingams, and sadhus painted in ash provide extraordinary visual and spiritual richness. Cremation ceremonies occur openly on the riverside ghats, a confrontation with mortality that travellers consistently describe as one of Nepal's most affecting experiences.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Day Three: Patan and Ason Market

Cross the ring road to Patan, a separate city that once had its own king and its own Durbar Square. Patan's royal square is arguably more refined than Kathmandu's, with the Krishna Mandir stone temple as its centrepiece. The Patan Museum inside the old palace is world-class, presenting metal casting, woodcarving, and stone sculpture in a restored courtyard setting.

Use Sajilo to move efficiently between these sites. The app connects you with drivers who know the backstreets and can navigate the construction that routinely blocks main roads in Kathmandu.

Practical Notes

Entry fees apply at most heritage sites and are separate from each other. Carry a mix of small denomination notes. Heritage zone entry passes (purchasable online) cover multiple Durbar Squares and are better value for multi-day visits. The best light for photography is in the first two hours after sunrise.

FAQ

How many heritage sites can I realistically visit in three days?
With good planning you can comfortably visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and Patan Durbar Square. Add Bhaktapur as a half-day extension if you have energy on day three.

Is Kathmandu safe for solo travellers?
Yes, Kathmandu is generally safe for solo travellers including solo women. The main irritants are persistent touts near tourist sites. A confident pace and polite but firm refusals handle most situations.

What is the best way to get between sites?
Ride-hailing is the most comfortable option. Taxis from the street require fare negotiation upfront. City buses are extremely cheap but very crowded during peak hours.
