Kanchenjunga (8,586m) sits in Nepal far east, straddling the border with Sikkim, India. Its base camp treks are genuine wilderness experiences with virtually no crowds.

Overview

The North Base Camp route runs from Taplejung (1,820m) to Pangpema (5,143m) over 14-18 days. The southern approach reaches Oktang (4,730m) for a different perspective on the massif. Both routes can be combined into a full circuit of 22-26 days. Trail infrastructure is improving but remains basic above Ghunsa — camping or very simple lodges. Fly to Biratnagar or Suketar (Taplejung) from Kathmandu; book your Kathmandu cab to the airport with Sajilo the morning of your flight.

Getting There

Fly Kathmandu–Biratnagar (50 min) then take a jeep to Taplejung (8-10 hours), or fly directly Kathmandu–Suketar (Taplejung) when weather permits. The road to Taplejung is rough in monsoon.

Key Highlights

Ghunsa village (3,410m) is a traditional Tibetan settlement with a working monastery and the last reliable food and accommodation. The glacier moraine above Lhonak camp frames Kanchenjunga, Jannu (7,711m), and Kirat Chuli in a single dramatic composition. Wildlife includes red pandas, snow leopards (rarely seen), and Himalayan tahr.
