Janakpur Ram Temple Pilgrimage Guide
Janakpur in the Madhesh Province is the legendary birthplace of Sita and the site of her marriage to Ram, making it one of the most important Vaishnava pilgrimage cities in South Asia.
Overview
Janakpur sits in the flat Terai plains of Madhesh Province, close to the Indian border. It is identified by Hindus as Janakpurdham โ the kingdom of King Janaka and the birthplace of his daughter Sita. The Janaki Mandir, an ornate white marble temple completed in 1911, marks the spot where Sita is believed to have been born. The city is also the terminus of a narrow-gauge railway from Jayanagar in India โ the only international railway in Nepal and a pilgrimage route in its own right.
Janaki Mandir
The Janaki Mandir dominates the city skyline with its Mughal-Rajput fusion architecture, white towers, and carved stone screens. The main shrine houses an image of Sita-Ram that is dressed and decorated in elaborate fashion for each of the daily puja sessions. The temple is most spectacular during the Ram Navami festival (March-April) when it is lit by thousands of lamps and filled with devotional music for several days.
The Sacred Ponds and Town
Janakpur has 72 sacred ponds (sagar and kund) within its boundaries, each associated with a different episode from the Ramayana. Dhanush Sagar and Ganga Sagar are the largest and most revered. Pilgrims circuit between ponds, dipping at each. The compact old bazaar sells Mithila paintings, terracotta figurines, and religious items โ Mithila art (also called Madhubani) is the living folk art tradition native to this region.
Getting There and Staying
Janakpur is reached by road from Kathmandu (about seven hours by bus through the Terai) or by a short flight to Janakpur Airport (35 minutes). Hotels range from basic pilgrim dharamshalas to comfortable mid-range guesthouses near the temple. The city is navigated primarily by bicycle rickshaw and electric tempo โ a delightful and chaotic experience. The best seasons are October to February and during major festivals.
