Janakpur: Mithila Culture and Ram Temple

Janakpur in the eastern Terai is the birthplace of Sita and one of Hinduism's holiest cities, a place where Mithila art covers walls, courtyards, and bodies with equal devotion.

The Sacred City

Janakpur sits in the Madhesh Province near the Indian border, 400km southeast of Kathmandu. It is one of the four most sacred sites in the Hindu tradition associated with the Ramayana, as the city where King Janak ruled and where Sita was born. The Janaki Mandir, the city's centrepiece, is a white marble temple of Rajput-Mughal architecture built in 1911 and dedicated to Sita. It is one of the largest temples in Nepal and draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year.

Janaki Mandir

The temple complex is most alive at dawn and dusk during aarti (prayer ceremony). The sound of bells, conch shells, and chanting fills the marble halls while priests offer flames to the deity. Visitors of all backgrounds are welcome to observe. The inner sanctum holds images of Sita and Ram adorned in fresh flowers and elaborate clothing changed multiple times daily.

Around the main temple, a series of smaller shrines, sacred ponds (kunds), and dharmashalas (pilgrims' rest houses) spread through the old city. The city's hundred-odd sacred ponds were used for ritual bathing and some remain active today.

Mithila Art

Mithila painting is the living art tradition of the Madhesh region, practised by women of the Maithili community on the walls of homes, on paper, and increasingly on cloth and canvas for commercial sale. The motifs โ€” lotus flowers, fish, elephants, the sun and moon, bridal scenes โ€” are drawn without preliminary sketching using bamboo twigs or fingers, in bold lines filled with vivid natural and synthetic colour.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Walking through Janakpur's older neighbourhoods, painted house facades appear at every turn. The Janakpur Women's Development Centre, about 2km from the main temple, is a cooperative where Mithila artists produce and sell paintings. Visiting supports the artists directly and gives an opportunity to watch the work being created.

Festivals

Vivah Panchami (November/December) commemorates the wedding of Ram and Sita with a massive procession re-enacting the marriage, drawing pilgrims from across India and Nepal. Chhath Puja (October/November) sees thousands gather at the sacred ponds before sunrise for ritual bathing and sun worship.

Sajilo operates in the eastern Terai region and can connect you with local transport from Janakpur station or bus park.

Getting There

Janakpur has its own airport with connections to Kathmandu. The Janakpur Railway (Nepal's only operating passenger train) runs a short route to the Indian border at Jayanagar. Road connections to Kathmandu take 7-8 hours via the East-West Highway.

FAQ

Is Janakpur accessible without a guide?
The main temple and central area are easy to navigate independently. For the Mithila art villages and more obscure sacred sites, a local guide adds significant value.

What is the dress code at Janaki Mandir?
Conservative dress is expected. Shoulders and legs covered. Remove shoes before entering. Photography restrictions apply in the inner sanctum.

How long should I spend in Janakpur?
One full day covers the main temple, the sacred ponds, and a visit to the Women's Development Centre. Add a second day if you want to explore surrounding Mithila villages.
