Overview

Holi arrives in late February or March, turning Nepal's streets into a riot of colored powder and water. In the Kathmandu Valley, Holi is celebrated a day before the Terai plains, following a different regional calendar. The Chir pole at Basantapur Durbar Square is erected days in advance and toppled on Holi eve. On the main day, people douse each other with abir powder, water guns, and balloons from rooftops and street corners. Music blasts from every direction, and trucks of revelers cruise through Thamel while tourists join locals in the free-for-all. In the Terai, the celebrations are even more intense, lasting well into the night with bonfires called Holika Dahan the evening before.

Planning this trip? ๐ŸŽ’

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Hill communities in the Kathmandu Valley celebrate Holi according to the lunar calendar's full moon in Falgun. Terai communities follow the Indian calendar, celebrating one day later. The Terai version tends to be louder and more prolonged, with stronger bhang traditions.
