Himalayan Climate: Seasons, Weather, and What to Expect
The Himalayas create their own weather systems that can shift from sunshine to blizzard in hours. Knowing the four seasons is essential for any trekker or climber planning a Nepal visit.
Nepal's Himalayan climate is governed by two dominant forces: the South Asian monsoon and the jet stream. Understanding both is non-negotiable for safe mountain travel.
Spring (March–May)
Spring is the primary climbing season for high-altitude expeditions. The jet stream lifts north of the Himalayas in late April and May, reducing summit winds. Temperatures at Everest Base Camp range from -10°C at night to 5°C by day. Lower elevations bloom with rhododendrons from March onward. Visibility is generally good, though afternoons can build thunderstorms from late May as the monsoon approaches.
Monsoon (June–September)
The South Asian monsoon delivers 80% of Nepal's annual rainfall between June and September. Trekking is still possible in rain-shadow areas like Upper Mustang, Dolpo, and the Manang Valley, which sit north of the main Himalayan ridge and receive little monsoon precipitation. The leeward zones stay dry while southern slopes are drenched. Flash floods and landslides pose serious risks on main trekking routes during this period.
Autumn (October–November)
Autumn rivals spring as the best trekking season. Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, offering the sharpest mountain views of the year. Temperatures are comfortable at lower elevations. October is the single busiest month on major trails like EBC and the Annapurna Circuit. Book accommodation and permits well in advance.

Winter (December–February)
High passes above 4,000m become snowed in, closing many routes. Lower-altitude treks like Ghorepani Poon Hill remain accessible. Kathmandu is pleasant and uncrowded. For climbers, winter expeditions to eight-thousanders are rare and extremely demanding — Nirmal Purja's winter ascent of K2 in 2021 was a landmark achievement.
FAQ
What is the best month for Everest Base Camp? October for clearest skies and October-November for post-monsoon stability. May for the spring bloom and highest summiting activity.
Does it snow in Kathmandu? Extremely rarely — the last significant snowfall in Kathmandu city occurred in 1944. Surrounding hills above 2,000m can receive light snow in January.
How accurate are mountain weather forecasts? Modern forecasting using Meteoblue and Mountain Forecast is reliable 3-5 days out but Himalayan microclimates can still surprise.
