Overview

Gosaikunda Lake sits at 4,380 metres in the Langtang National Park, north of Kathmandu. The lake is sacred to Shiva: legend holds that the god struck the Himalayas with his trident to release water and quench his thirst after swallowing poison during the churning of the cosmic ocean. The lake complex includes several smaller lakes nearby, each with its own mythological significance. Hindus believe bathing in the lake washes away all sins, and the Janai Purnima festival each August draws crowds exceeding 15,000 pilgrims.

The Trek

The standard approach starts from Dhunche (1,950 m) in Rasuwa district. The route climbs through rhododendron forests, past the villages of Sing Gompa and Lauribina, reaching the lake in two to three days. A shorter but steep approach from Sundarijal via the Helambu circuit is also popular. Total elevation gain from Dhunche is about 2,400 metres. The trail is well-marked but exposed above the treeline. Teahouses operate along the route year-round, though facilities are basic.

The Sacred Lake and Rituals

The main lake is surrounded by prayer flags, small stone shrines, and the Gosaikunda shrine to Shiva. Pilgrims immerse themselves completely in the glacial water as an act of purification. During Janai Purnima, Brahmin priests change the sacred thread (janai) worn by Hindu men, and thousands camp beside the lake through the full moon night. The atmosphere is electric โ€” fires, drums, devotional singing, and the vast dark Himalayan sky above.

Acclimatisation and Safety

Altitude sickness is the primary risk. The ascent from Dhunche to Gosaikunda in one or two days is aggressive. Spend a night at Lauribina (3,900 m) before pushing to the lake. Carry warm clothing โ€” temperatures drop below freezing at night even in August. Trekking poles are useful on the steep sections above Sing Gompa. A national park entry permit (NPR 3,000) is required.

FAQ

When is Janai Purnima at Gosaikunda?
The festival falls on the full moon of the Nepali month of Shrawan, usually in late July or early August. Check the Nepali calendar for the exact date each year.

Can beginners trek to Gosaikunda?
Yes, with adequate preparation. Fitness and acclimatisation matter more than technical skill. Two to three weeks of regular cardio training before the trek is recommended for those not used to hill walking.

Is a guide required for the Gosaikunda trek?
A guide is not mandatory but highly recommended for first-time trekkers. The trail is well-marked in clear weather but fog and snow can disorient even experienced hikers above 4,000 metres.
